Glacier National Park

Every spring (early May through June) and in the fall (depending on snowfall), before (and after) the Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully opened to cars, hikers and bikers have the opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed pace on this National Historic Landmark. As the plowing crews make their way up to Logan Pass the plowed sections behind them are available for a car-free experience. Cyclists can enjoy a 15 mile ride with approximately 3,000 feet of elevation gain on Going to the Sun Road.  Crews will mark the closure of the hiker-biker section of the road with a sign. Visitors will not be permitted beyond this point while the crews are plowing. After work hours or on days the crews are not plowing feel free to go as far as you like.

Whitefish Shuttles will pick you up in either Kalispell or Whitefish.  You can select your pick up locations when making your reservation.  We will then transport you in our comfortable passenger vans into beautiful Glacier National Park.  If you are hiking, we will drop you at either Apgar Visitor Center or McDonald Lodge.   For cyclists, we will continue up to the vehicle gates at either Lake McDonald Lodge or Avalanche Creek, on the west side of the park.

For updated status on where the hiker-biker closure is today visit the National Park Service's Road Status Page. It is updated Monday through Friday with the most recent conditions. Crews do not work on the weekend so there are no hiker-biker closures on Saturday or Sunday.  Bring bear spray (or purchase at check-out and we will have it ready for you), water, and food and plan your day the same as you would if hiking a trail. Be on the lookout for wildlife and be aware that bicyclists and hikers are using the same roadway. Avalanche conditions exist throughout the park and along the roadway. Be aware of conditions prior to starting your trip and avoid known avalanche paths.

What To Bring

When packing for a bike ride in Glacier National Park in the spring — think like you are about to go for a hike in the park. We will get plenty of nice days where you will be able to wear shorts and a t-shirt, however, keep in mind that rain and snow are very possible and with very little notice. Even if the forecast is calling for sunny, warm weather, ensure that you bring synthetic layers, including  tights or pants. Please also pack rain pants and jacket, and a warm coat (either fleece or fluffy), as conditions are likely to change. Gloves and a warm hat are a necessity, particularly in the shoulder seasons. Hiking shoes are recommended if for some reason you aren't able to ride.   Bring a water bottle or purchase a Whitefish Shuttle branded water bottle.   Also, if you’re biking in Glacier National Park, be sure to check out the regulations.  Cost does not include Glacier National Park entrance fees or gratuity for Shuttle Driver.  PLEASE BE SURE TO PURCHASE YOUR PASS TO THE PARK PRIOR TO COMING.  CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE PASS!  Park entrance fees, meals and guide’s gratuities are not included.
