Every spring (early May through June) and in the fall (depending on snowfall), when Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed to cars, hikers and bikers have the opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed pace on this National Historic Landmark. As the plowing crews make their way up to Logan Pass the plowed sections behind them are available for a car-free experience. Cyclists can enjoy a 15 mile ride with approximately 3,000 feet of elevation gain on Going to the Sun Road. Crews will mark the closure of the hiker-biker section of the road with a sign. Visitors will not be permitted beyond this point while the crews are plowing. After work hours or on days the crews are not plowing feel free to go as far as you like.
For those who missed riding Going to the Sun Road in the spring without vehicles, we offer a guided, fully supported Going to the Sun Road Tour. We run these trips every day through the summer months, either starting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid traffic in the middle of the day. The Tour includes a personal guide as well as a sag wagon that will be accompanying you on your journey. Also included are snacks, water, charcuterie board, and a Whitefish Tours & Shuttle Specialized Purist water bottle. This is a special trip, and a bucket list for every serious cyclist!
Our Camas Road Cycle Tour leaves from Whitefish and takes you up the scenic North Fork Valley. We will begin up the North Fork Road at the western boundary to Glacier National Park. From there, it is approximately 12 miles each way of paved road. There is a climb in the first couple miles, then it levels out as you cycle past various road side interpretive displays and pull outs. There are vehicles on the road, but this road is far less traveled than Going to the Sun Road. Once you arrive in Apgar, you can visit Apgar Village and get a cold drink or maybe a huckleberry shake! Coming back from Apgar, there is an approximately 800 foot climb over the first couple miles, then it levels out with a fun downhill at the end. Enjoy views of Glacier National Park while coasting back to to our meet point.
35-mile out and back road bike tour on rolling terrain crossing numerous streams, gorgeous farmlands, and featuring very little vehicular traffic. AM or PM guided bike tour options available.
